Women’s health care that doesn’t rush you
Plenty of women put up with leaking, heaviness, pelvic pain or a back that never quite recovered after having a baby — often because they were told it was just part of getting older, or part of being a mum. It usually isn’t, and there is often something that can be done about it.
Women’s health physiotherapy looks at the pelvic floor, the abdominal muscles, the hips and the lower back as one connected system. Your physiotherapist assesses what is actually going on, explains it in plain English, and builds a plan around your body and your goals.
At Hip to Toe you get a private treatment room, a full appointment, and a physiotherapist with additional training and a special interest in pelvic health. Nothing happens without your consent, and every part of the assessment is explained before it takes place.
We’re a local Gold Coast clinic in Arundel, and we’ve been treating this community for years. You can book directly — no doctor’s referral required — though we welcome referrals and work with GPs, obstetricians and midwives whenever that helps.
Women’s health physiotherapy at Hip to Toe
Three areas make up most of what we see. If what’s bothering you isn’t listed, call us anyway — we’ll tell you honestly whether we can help or point you to someone who can.
Pelvic floor assessment & rehab
For bladder or bowel symptoms, heaviness and prolapse symptoms, pelvic pain, or a pelvic floor that isn’t coping with exercise. Assessment is thorough and consent-led, and treatment is usually a mix of retraining, breathing and pressure strategies, and a progressive strength program you can actually keep up.
Pregnancy & postnatal care
Pelvic girdle pain, pubic bone pain and lower back pain during pregnancy, plus preparation for birth. Afterwards we assess abdominal separation and pelvic floor recovery and guide your return to running, lifting or the gym at a pace that suits how you’re healing.
Perimenopause & menopause
Hormonal change can affect pelvic floor function, joint comfort, bone loading and strength. We use targeted strength work, hands-on treatment where it helps, and straightforward education so you can keep moving and keep doing what you enjoy through the transition.
We also see women for
- Pelvic pain and painful intercourse
- Prolapse symptom management
- Abdominal separation (DRAM)
- Post-surgical rehabilitation
- Returning to running or the gym
- Hip, knee and foot pain
- Bladder urgency and frequency
- Mastitis and blocked ducts

Not sure if it’s worth booking?
Most women wait far longer than they need to. A phone call costs nothing, and our reception team can tell you whether an appointment is likely to help.
What women come to see us about
Assessment and treatment are always tailored to your individual presentation. The descriptions below are a general guide to how we approach each area — your own plan is built after we’ve assessed you.
Bladder & bowel symptoms
Leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh or lift. Sudden urgency, going to the toilet frequently, trouble emptying properly, or constipation. Treatment commonly involves pelvic floor retraining, bladder and bowel habit education, breathing and pressure management, and a graded strengthening program.
Pelvic organ prolapse
Heaviness, dragging or a feeling of pressure, often worse late in the day or after being on your feet. We assess your symptoms and how you load your pelvic floor, then work on strength, technique and activity modification so you can get back to normal daily activity and exercise with more confidence.
Pelvic & sexual pain
Pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, vaginismus, perineal pain and postpartum scar discomfort. This is assessed carefully and entirely at your pace. Treatment may include gentle manual therapy, down-training and relaxation strategies for an overactive pelvic floor, and structured rehabilitation.
Pregnancy-related pain
Pelvic girdle pain, pubic symphysis pain and lower back pain are common in pregnancy and don’t have to be endured. We look at how you’re loading and moving, provide hands-on treatment where appropriate, and give you support strategies and exercise that let you stay active and comfortable.
Postnatal recovery
Whether you’re six weeks or six years post-birth, it’s not too late. We assess abdominal separation (DRAM), pelvic floor function, and any lingering back or hip pain, then build a progressive plan towards whatever you want to get back to — including running, lifting and sport.
Perimenopause & menopause
Hormonal change can bring new pelvic floor symptoms, joint aches, stiffness and a drop in strength. We provide targeted strength programs, pelvic floor rehabilitation, and education about loading and bone health so you can keep doing the things you want to do.
Getting back to exercise & sport
If running, jumping, lifting or the gym brings on symptoms, we assess pelvic floor function alongside strength, load tolerance and movement control, then build a return-to-activity plan that progresses at a rate your body is actually ready for.
What happens when you book
No surprises. Here’s exactly how a women’s health appointment at Hip to Toe runs.
You talk, we listen
A proper conversation about your symptoms, your history, your birth history if relevant, and what you want to get back to. Nothing is assumed.
Assessment, with consent
We explain every part of the assessment before it happens and you decide what goes ahead. An internal pelvic floor assessment is often useful but is never required, and there are alternatives if you’d prefer.
A plan in plain English
You’ll leave knowing what we found, what’s likely driving it, what treatment involves and roughly how long it may take.
Progress and review
We reassess as you go and adjust the plan based on how you respond, and we’ll tell you when you no longer need us.
Referrals, health funds and fees
Current fees for every appointment type are listed on our fees page, so the price you see is the price you pay. If you’re not sure which appointment to book, call reception on 07 5571 7329 and we’ll sort it out for you.

Women’s health physiotherapy FAQs
What is women’s health physiotherapy?
It’s physiotherapy focused on the pelvic floor and the conditions that affect women through pregnancy, after birth, and into perimenopause and beyond. That includes bladder and bowel symptoms, prolapse symptoms, pelvic pain, abdominal separation and pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain. Treatment combines assessment, hands-on techniques where appropriate, education and a tailored exercise program.
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
No. You can book directly with us at any time. We do receive lots of referrals from GPs, obstetricians, midwives and women’s health nurses and we’re very happy to work alongside them. If you have a Medicare Chronic Condition Management Plan from your GP, bring it along and we can process the rebate in-clinic on the day.
Will I need an internal examination?
An internal pelvic floor assessment gives the clearest picture, but it is always your choice and never a condition of treatment. Your physiotherapist will explain what it involves and why it may help before anything happens, and you can decline or stop at any point. There are useful alternatives — including real-time ultrasound and external assessment — and plenty can be achieved without an internal examination.
How many appointments will I need?
It depends entirely on what’s going on, how long it has been there and what you want to get back to. Some women need only a few appointments and a home program; others benefit from a longer block of care. Your physiotherapist will give you an honest estimate after your first assessment and reassess as you go.
Can I bring my baby to the appointment?
Yes, absolutely. Plenty of our postnatal patients bring their baby along and there is room for a pram in the treatment room. If it makes things easier, bring someone with you who can hold the baby during the assessment.
Is it too late if I gave birth years ago?
No. We regularly see women months, years or decades after birth. Pelvic floor symptoms often respond to assessment and a properly structured program regardless of how long they’ve been there, and it’s worth having it looked at rather than continuing to work around it.
Can I claim on my private health fund?
Yes. We can process private health rebates on the spot in accordance with your provider and policy. If you’d like to know exactly what rebate you’ll receive, call reception during business hours on 07 5571 7329 with your health fund card handy and we’ll check it for you.
