Why Hip to Toe

Most blokes wait too long

Men tend to turn up when the pain finally stops them doing something — when they can’t run, can’t lift, can’t get through a shift, or can’t sleep on that shoulder any more. By then it’s usually been going on for months.

It doesn’t need to get to that point, and the good news is that most of what we see responds well to a proper assessment and a structured plan. The key is finding what’s actually driving the problem rather than just chasing where it hurts.

Hip to Toe has physiotherapists and podiatrists working in the same clinic, which matters more than it sounds. Knee pain can come from the foot. Heel pain can come from the hip. Having both disciplines in one building means you get assessed properly the first time instead of being bounced between clinics.

You can book directly — no doctor’s referral needed — and we run early and after-hours appointments so you don’t have to take a day off to get seen.

What we help with

Men’s health at Hip to Toe

Three areas cover most of what men come in for. If yours isn’t here, call us — we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.

Sports & training injuries

Running injuries, gym injuries, footy and surf injuries, muscle and ligament tears, tendinopathies and the overuse problems that build up slowly. We assess load, strength and movement, then build a rehab plan that gets you back to training rather than just resting until it settles.

Back, neck & shoulder pain

Lower back pain and sciatica, desk and driving-related neck pain, headaches, rotator cuff and shoulder problems. Our physiotherapists use hands-on treatment, dry needling where clinically appropriate, and exercise prescription aimed at the cause rather than just the symptom.

Feet, heels & knees

Heel pain and plantar fasciitis, Achilles problems, knee and hip pain, flat feet and bunions. Our structural podiatry approach looks at how your foot and lower limb are functioning and what that’s doing further up the chain — with orthotic alternatives available where they suit you.

We also see men for

  • Ingrown toenails & nail surgery
  • Fungal and thickened toenails
  • Corns, calluses and warts
  • Diabetic foot checks
  • Work and WorkCover injuries
  • Post-operative rehabilitation
  • Running and gait assessment
  • Getting back to exercise safely

Conditions we treat

What men come to see us about

Assessment and treatment are always tailored to your individual presentation. The descriptions below are a general guide — your own plan is built after we’ve assessed you.

Lower back pain & sciatica

One of the most common reasons men book in. Back pain can come from joint stiffness, muscle weakness, overuse, injury or altered movement patterns, and sciatic symptoms often involve nerve irritation in the lower spine. We assess thoroughly to work out what’s contributing, then treat with manual therapy, exercise prescription and movement retraining.

Shoulder & rotator cuff problems

Shoulder bursitis, rotator cuff and tendon injuries, AC joint injuries, instability and osteoarthritic shoulder conditions. Treatment may include manual therapy, soft tissue work, graded loading programs and dry needling where clinically appropriate and agreed with you.

Heel pain & plantar fasciitis

That first-step-in-the-morning heel pain is one of the things we see most. Our structural approach looks at how the foot is loading and what’s happening at the ankle, knee and hip, rather than treating the heel in isolation. Orthotic alternatives are available where they suit your presentation.

Knee & hip pain

Runner’s knee, patellar tendinopathy, osteoarthritic knees and hips, glute and hip tendinopathy. Because knee and hip pain is often influenced by foot mechanics and hip strength, having podiatry and physiotherapy in one clinic lets us assess the whole chain.

Achilles & calf injuries

Achilles tendinopathy, calf strains and tears are common in men returning to running or sport after time off. Treatment centres on progressive loading, gait and footwear review, and a structured return-to-running plan.

The foot problems men ignore

Ingrown toenails, thickened or fungal nails, hard corns, calluses and plantar warts. None of it is dramatic and all of it is easily dealt with — and ingrown toenails in particular tend to get worse, not better, when left. We offer nail surgery and also options to avoid it.

Diabetic foot checks

If you have diabetes, an annual foot check is important for monitoring circulation, sensation and skin integrity. It’s a straightforward appointment and one of the more worthwhile things you can do for your long-term foot health. Medicare care plan appointments can often be used for this.

Work injuries & post-surgical rehab

We manage work-related injuries and post-operative rehabilitation including orthopaedic surgery recovery, building strength and function back up safely with a graded program aimed at getting you back to work and activity.

How it works

What happens when you book

Straightforward, and no mystery about what you’re paying for.

Proper assessment

We take a history and assess movement, strength and the structures involved — including how your feet and hips are loading, not just where it hurts.

Find the driver

Clinical testing to identify what’s actually contributing to the problem, so treatment targets the cause rather than chasing symptoms.

Treat and load

Hands-on treatment where it helps, plus a progressive exercise program. You leave the first appointment with something to do, not just an appointment card.

Back to it

We reassess as you go and progress you back to running, lifting, work or sport — and tell you when you don’t need us any more.

Common questions

Men’s health FAQs

Should I see a physiotherapist or a podiatrist?

If it’s back, neck, shoulder or a sports injury above the ankle, start with physiotherapy. If it’s toenails, skin, a diabetic foot check or foot pain, start with podiatry. If it’s heel, knee or hip pain, either is a reasonable starting point — we assess across both and will move you to the right clinician if needed. Call reception on 07 5571 7329 and describe what’s going on; we’ll book you with the right person.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly at any time. We do receive a lot of GP referrals and we welcome them. If your GP has given you a Medicare Chronic Condition Management Plan, bring it along — it allows up to five subsidised physio or podiatry appointments per calendar year, and we can process the rebate in-clinic on the day. We don’t bulk bill, so standard fees apply and payment is required on the day.

I’ve had this for years. Is it too late?

Long-standing problems often still respond well once they’re assessed properly and loaded correctly. Chronic pain and long-term tendon problems usually take longer than a fresh injury, and we’ll be upfront with you about that at the first appointment — including if we think you’d be better off seeing someone else.

Can I keep training while I’m being treated?

Usually yes, in some form. Complete rest is rarely the answer for most musculoskeletal problems. We’ll normally modify what you’re doing rather than stop it, and build the load back up as things improve. Tell your physio what you train and what you’re working towards.

Do you treat work injuries and WorkCover?

Yes, we manage work-related injuries. Bring your claim details to your first appointment and our reception team will let you know what’s needed. Call us on 07 5571 7329 beforehand if you’d like to check how it works.

Do you offer men’s pelvic health physiotherapy?

Not currently at our Arundel clinic. Men’s pelvic health — including continence concerns and rehabilitation after prostate surgery — needs a clinician with specific training in that area. Our sister clinic, Balance Physio at Mermaid Beach, has a clinician working in pelvic health, so call us on 07 5571 7329 and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Can I claim on my private health fund?

Yes. We process private health rebates on the spot in accordance with your provider and policy. If you’d like to know exactly what rebate you’ll get, call reception during business hours with your health fund card handy and we’ll check it for you.
