Understanding Sciatica

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. You can see the sciatic nerve shown in yellow on this diagram:

Sciatic pain typically affects one side of the body and can vary from a mild ache to sharp, excruciating pain. Sciatica is not a medical condition in and of itself, per-se. Sciatica is really a symptom of another underlying problem such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or a bone spur compressing the sciatic nerve. Let’s learn more about those below.

Herniated Discs

A herniated disc occurs when the soft inside part of a disc in your spine pushes out through a tear in the tougher outer layer of the disc. This ruptured disc can start to press against the sciatic nerve causing pain, numbness, and tingling in your lower back, buttocks, and down your leg.

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is when the passage in your spine that the spinal cord and nerves pass through, gets narrow. This narrow space can push on the nerves, like the sciatic nerve, causing sciatica symptoms. Spinal stenosis can occur due to ageing, wear and tear on your spine, or the growth of bone spurs.

Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is when one bone in your spine slips forward over the one below it. This shift can squeeze on the nerves, including the sciatic nerve, leading to sciatica symptoms. The amount of slippage decides how severe the symptoms are and can be caused by things like aging, fractures, or birth issues.

Piriformis Syndrome

The piriformis muscle in your buttocks can bother or squeeze the sciatic nerve when it tightens up. This can lead to sciatica symptoms such as pain, tingling, and numbness in your buttocks and down your leg. Sitting for a long time, injuring your buttocks, or using the muscle too much can all contribute to piriformis syndrome.

Bone Spurs

Bone spurs, also called osteophytes, are abnormal bony growths that can form on the edges of bones. In the case of sciatica, bone spurs might grow on the bones in your spine. As these spurs get bigger, they can press on the sciatic nerve, causing compression and sciatica symptoms. Bone spurs can develop due to aging, conditions like osteoarthritis, or chronic inflammation.

If you or someone you know is dealing with the challenges of sciatica, it’s time to take proactive steps towards understanding and managing this condition. Knowledge is key, and by being informed about the various causes, such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, piriformis syndrome, and bone spurs, you empower yourself to make informed decisions about your health.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Knowing the specific cause of your own case of sciatica is important so you can avoid prolonging or worsening your experience of sciatica. It’s highly recommended to visit a suitable health professional as soon as you begin to experience symptoms of sciatica. Let’s look at some of the common signs and symptoms that sciatica sufferers experience.

Pain

The main thing people notice with sciatica is pain. This pain usually starts in the lower back and buttocks and then goes down one leg. The pain can feel different for different people. For instance, it might present as a dull ache for some people but be experience as a sharp, shooting pain for others. How much it hurts and what it feels like will often vary according to what is causing the sciatica. For instance, sciatica resulting from a slipped disc may have different symptoms than sciatica caused by piriformis syndrome. Certain positions like standing or sitting for a long time can make the pain worse for people with sciatica.

Numbness and Tingling

Many people with sciatica feel numbness, tingling or ‘pins and needles’ in the leg that’s affected. This happens because the sciatic nerve is being pressed or irritated. The numbness and tingling can go from the lower back and buttocks all the way down to the toes. Sometimes these feelings come and go and other times they may persist. It really depends on how much the nerve is being irritated or compressed and how long it has been occurring.

Muscle Weakness

Sciatica can sometimes lead to weakness in your leg or foot. This can make it hard to move or control your leg properly. The weakness happens because the compression or irritation of the nerve prevents the proper transmission of signals between the brain and the muscles. This weakness can obviously negatively impact your everyday life when things like walking, going up stairs, or keeping your balance become more difficult. This is why it’s important to fix any muscle weakness quickly to prevent a worsening of symptoms and to restore your normal mobility ASAP.

Burning Sensation

Some people with sciatica experience a burning sensation along the path of the sciatic nerve. This burning feeling is sometimes accompanied by sciatic pain and could mean the nerve is irritated or inflamed. It could either be a constant sensation or it might come and go. Either way, it all adds to the overall discomfort of having sciatica.

You’re probably realising from what you’ve just read that sciatica symptoms can be quite different for each person. The sciatica symptoms that you personally experience will depend on things like what’s causing the sciatica, how healthy you are, what lifestyle activities you partake in, etc. If you’re experiencing signs or symptoms of sciatica it’s really important to immediately arrange to meet with a suitably qualified health professional and develop a tailored approach to get you back to feeling your best.

Learning About Lower Back Pain and Sciatica

Lower back pain and sciatica are a common combination that many people experience. Let’s find out more about how these issues are often connected.

Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is such a common occurrence and many people will experience it at some point in their lives. This can be either due to an injury or as part of a longer-term health issue. The symptoms of lower back pain are also varied. For instance, some people experience a dull ache and others experience a sudden pain that accompanies certain movements. Some of the common causes of lower back include things such as muscle strains, ligament sprains, sports or work injuries, or medical conditions resulting from ageing, such as osteoarthritis.

Sciatica

Pain and discomfort from sciatica differs from typical lower back pain in that sciatic pain starts in the lower back and goes down one or both legs. It happens when a nerve called the sciatic nerve is pressed or irritated. This can be due to issues like a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, misaligned hips, or tight muscles in the buttocks.

How Sciatic and Lower Back Pain Are Linked

Lower back pain and sciatica often go together and this can sometimes confuse the diagnosis. Conditions causing lower back pain, like a herniated disc, can also cause sciatica. For example, if a disc in the lower back puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, it can cause pain that goes down the leg.

Symptoms

Lower back pain might make your back feel stiff or sore, while sciatica can make your leg hurt, tingle, or feel numb or weak.

Managing and Treating

The first step to recovery is correctly figuring out what is causing your pain. Once you have identified the cause of your sciatica, you can work with your health professional to select a suitable path forward. Common remedial options include doing specific exercises, making changes in your lifestyle, or getting treatment from a healthcare professional. Strengthening your core muscles, keeping a healthy weight and having good posture are all things that can help reduce symptoms of sciatica.

In summary, knowing about the link between lower back pain and sciatica is important for a correct diagnosis and in selecting the right course of treatment. Be sure to reach out to Hip to Toe as soon as you experience any pain and discomfort so we can help give you an understanding of what’s causing your sciatic pain and help get you back to your everyday activities, but without the pain!

Treatment Options

Podiatry – Structural and Biomechanical

The Australian Podiatry Association defines podiatry as “the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of foot and lower limb conditions.” Many people misunderstand podiatry as being limited to helping people with conditions such as ingrown toenails and corns etc. But in reality podiatrists are a key first point of contact for managing foot pain, heel pain, knee pain, ankle pain and hip pain conditions. Podiatrists have an excellent understanding of the physiology of the entire lower limb and they understand how biomechanical issues in the lower limb can lead to a range of other health conditions.

MME (Mobilisation, Manipulation & Exercises)

It may seem counterintuitive but sometimes conditions such as lower back pain and sciatica can actually be caused (or related to) conditions originating in your feet, ankles, knees (lower limbs). That’s why at Hip to Toe we have Podiatrists and Physiotherapy practitioners who are trained in a structural podiatry modality called ‘MME’ (Mobilisation, Manipulation & Exercises). This modality looks at the alignment of your feet, ankles, knees and hips and aims to correct misalignment that is causing pain, discomfort or reduced mobility using a combination of hands-on therapy and strengthening exercises.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a structured and personalised approach to enhancing your body’s movement, strengthening muscles, and alleviating the symptoms associated with sciatica. When dealing with sciatica, a physiotherapist becomes a valuable partner in your journey toward improved mobility and reduced pain.

Podiatry and physiotherapy practitioners who are also trained in MME are a powerful combination in the fight against sciatica and lower back pain. This is a rare combination that can be found at Hip to Toe.

1. Guidance from a Professional

Having a trained and experienced healthcare professional (such as a podiatrist or physiotherapist) to guide you through the process of your recovery can take a lot of the stress out of dealing with your condition. They assess your condition, taking into account factors like your pain levels, range of motion and any physical limitations. They will also consider your current lifestyle and mobility requirements from work, family and sporting commitments. This allows them to work with you to create a comprehensive plan to target your unique challenges.

2. Goal-Oriented Plan

The primary goal of treatment at Hip to Toe is to use podiatry and physiotherapy is to facilitate easier movement, relax tense muscles and promote healing. By focusing on specific hands-on manipulation of tissues and appropriate exercises, the physiotherapist aims to reduce the pressure on the sciatic nerve to minimise your pain and discomfort.

3. Hands-On Techniques

Your podiatrist and/or physiotherapist will likely employ hands-on techniques, such as manual manipulation and massage of your affected physiology, to further enhance the effectiveness of the treatment. These techniques help release tension in muscles, improve circulation and contribute to an overall sense of well-being. Often you can feel a level of immediate improvement in your condition even after the first session of hands-on manual therapy.

4. Customised Exercise Program

A key aspect of your treatment at Hip to Toe involves developing a tailored exercise plan that suits your specific needs and abilities. Exercises are carefully chosen to address your individual condition, aiming to enhance flexibility, build strength, and improve your overall bodily function and mobility.

5. Empowering Patients

Our podiatrist and physiotherapy practitioners aim to empower you to participate in your own healing process. Your practitioner will typically educate you about your condition to explain the purpose of how each exercise or treatment modality contributes to relieving your sciatica. If you are ever unsure about your condition or treatment, make sure you ask your practitioner to explain in more detail or in simpler terms (as we all know they sometimes use jargon or unfamiliar terms!).

6. Comprehensive Approach

Podiatry and physiotherapy often involve a more holistic (multi-faceted) approach that goes beyond simply addressing the immediate symptoms of your sciatica. This comprehensive strategy aims to identify the underlying causes of sciatica, which might not always be immediately apparent. This helps provide a long-term benefit and a reduced likelihood of recurring issues.

7. Monitoring and Adjustments

Throughout your treatment process, your therapist continually monitors your progress. They may make adjustments to the exercise plan based on how your body responds, ensuring that the treatment remains effective and tailored to your evolving needs.

In essence, your treatment at Hip to Toe will be a dynamic and collaborative process that empowers you to actively participate in your healing journey. Through targeted exercises and the guidance of a skilled professional, you can regain control over your body, minimise sciatica symptoms, and work towards a future of improved mobility and well-being.
At Home Treatment Options for Sciatica and Lower Back Pain

Heat and Cold Therapy

Putting something warm or cold on the sore area is a common at-home treatment to make sciatic pain feel better. People often use both heat and cold treatments depending on what feels good and what helps with their symptoms. Heat helps by making your blood flow better, relaxing muscles, and reducing stiffness. Cold works by numbing the area, lessening swelling, and giving relief. For heat, many people use a wheat bag or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel to provide some relief on the painful area. For cold, many people use a bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel to provide some relief on the painful area.

Yoga and Pilates

Yoga and Pilates are kinds of gentle exercise that focus on making your body more flexible and strong. These exercises strengthen the core muscles, which can be helpful for people with sciatica and back pain. Making your core stronger supports your spine and can sometimes lessen the pressure on the sciatic nerve. Also, the gentle stretching and controlled movements in Yoga and Pilates could improve flexibility and make sciatica symptoms feel better.

Mind-Body Techniques

Managing stress and relaxing are important ways to relieve sciatica. Techniques like meditation and deep breathing help reduce stress. When the body is stressed, muscles can get tight, adding to sciatic pain. Using these techniques regularly may lower muscle tension, easing pain and discomfort for people with sciatica.

These alternative methods are usually seen as additions to regular medical treatments for sciatica. It’s crucial for people to talk to their healthcare providers before trying new treatments, including these alternatives. While some people may find relief with these methods, how well they work can be different for each person. Managing sciatica might involve a mix of traditional medical treatments, alternative methods, and lifestyle changes to suit each person’s unique needs. Regular communication with healthcare professionals helps create a well-rounded and personalised plan for managing sciatica symptoms.

Stretching

Sometimes stretching can provide instant (albeit perhaps temporary) sciatica pain relief.

It’s crucial to be gentle and not overstretch. If you have any concerns or if the pain persists, immediately stop the exercise and consult with a healthcare professional for personalised advice and further evaluation.

Medications

Many people turn to medications to help ease the pain and swelling linked to sciatica and back pain. For example, this includes pain-relief medications to help manage pain and anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling around the sciatic nerve.

Ultimately, you only use medications to mask or reduce the sensation or symptoms of your medical condition. They are not a cure. To avoid the ongoing expense and side effects that accompany many medications, a more preferable solution is to use other treatment modalities (such as podiatry, MME or physiotherapy) to attempt to resolve the cause of your symptoms so medications are no longer required.

Epidural Steroid Injections

In extreme cases of sciatica, which cannot be resolved via other treatment modalities, a medical practitioner might suggest injections of corticosteroids directly around the sciatic nerve. These injections can lower swelling and ease pain.

Surgery

In other extreme cases of sciatica, which cannot be resolved via other treatment modalities, some people have no option but to resort to surgical intervention. Because of the risks and expense of surgery, it is usually only used as a last resort. Common surgeries for extreme cases of sciatica include taking out part of a slipped disc or making more space around the sciatic nerve.

Wrapping it Up

Sciatica is more than just regular back or leg pain and it can have a huge influence on how you live your life. It’s important to accurately diagnose the cause of your sciatica to get the best treatment outcome. The treatment that is right for you depends on your overall, specific situation and medical condition. The treatment modality that you choose should be something that you decide on in conjunction with your medical practitioner. A common approach is to try less-invasive therapies first (such as podiatry, MME and physiotherapy like what we offer at Hip to Toe) and attempt to resolve your condition. If these modalities are unsuccessful, your practitioner will usually suggest other treatment types that could be more suitable for you.

FAQs

Are there risk factors associated with sciatica?

Yes, some things make it more likely for you to get sciatica. These include things like aging, being overweight and not being active enough.

Can sciatica affect both legs?

Yes, sciatica can affect one or both of your legs. It depends on where the problem is with your sciatic nerve. It is more common for sciatica to only affect one leg.

What lifestyle factors contribute to sciatica?

Sciatica can be more likely if you spend a lot of time sitting (especially with bad posture or on an unsuitable seat), if you don’t exercise enough and if you lift things incorrectly or life excessive weight. To lower the chances of getting sciatica, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle with regular movement and proper lifting techniques to keep your spine in good condition.

How is sciatica different from other back pain conditions?

Sciatica is different from regular back pain because the pain goes down the leg. Other back pain usually stays in the back. So, when you have sciatica, the pain travels from your lower back through your hips and down to your leg.

Are there specific stretches recommended for sciatica relief?

Yes, there are gentle stretches that can help ease sciatic pain. These usually focus on improving flexibility in the lower back and legs.

How long does it typically take for sciatica to resolve?

Sciatica can get better on its own, but it might take a few weeks or even months. It is different for everyone. It is important to contact a health professional at the early onset of symptoms so you can prevent your sciatica worsening or persisting.

Are there preventive measures to avoid recurrent episodes of sciatica?

Yes, you can lower the chances of sciatica coming back by staying active, using proper body mechanics, strengthening your core and maintaining a healthy weight.

What are the potential complications of untreated sciatica?

If left untreated, sciatica can lead to more pain and negatively affect your mobility and daily life. In some cases, it can cause weakness or numbness in the leg.

Can weight management play a role in preventing or managing sciatica?

Keeping a healthy weight is important in avoiding or managing sciatica. If you have extra weight, it puts more pressure on your lower back, making sciatica more pronounced and painful. Certain foods are increasingly associated with inflammation. Eating good food and staying active can help stop and handle sciatic pain.

Knee pain is one of the most common conditions that we treat at Hip to Toe. Most people will experience pain in their knees at some point in their lives. Knee pain ranges from short-term discomfort that goes away on its own to long-term severe pain that makes it hard to get on with your daily activities.

Sometimes all that is required to heal your knee pain is to rest. However, in some cases, knee pain can be persistent and it will not get better without some form of treatment. If you have already tried resting your knee and the pain still will not go away on its own, it is highly recommended that you seek treatment ASAP to avoid worsening your condition and potentially causing long-term damage to your knees.

Complications From Misdiagnosis of Knee Pain

Something we frequently see at Hip to Toe are patients who come to us for help with long-term knee pain that they have been unsuccessful at treating on their own or elsewhere. This is sometimes due to an incorrect diagnosis of the cause of the knee pain or inappropriate or ineffective treatment selection.

Correctly diagnosing the cause of your knee pain allows us to present you with appropriate treatment options to consider which have the highest chance of a positive outcome for you. This is why our initial consultation process typically requires medical imaging (such as bulk-billed X-Rays) to help us accurately diagnose your knee condition.

Contact us today if you would like to discuss how we could help you with your knee pain.

Causes of Persistent Knee Pain

There are many causes and types of knee pain, many of which you can learn about below.

Bursitis

Bursitis is one of the most common causes of knee pain that we see and treat at Hip to Toe. Bursitis is a condition that commonly occurs in the knees and hips when a small sac full of fluid (called a ‘bursa’) becomes inflamed and starts to cause pain.

Bursae (plural of bursa) are located within your body near bony areas and joints. They act as a cushion to stop your bones rubbing on muscles, tendons and skin so your joints can move smoothly.

We frequently see cases of patients with knee pain bursitis that is caused by the joints in the feet, knees and hips being misaligned in the wrong position. This prevents the joint from moving past the bursa properly and ultimately causes excess rubbing, inflammation and pain.

Correcting joint misalignment in the feet through mobilisation and manipulation along with strengthening exercises can often relieve bursitis and avoid reoccurrences.

Tendonitis

Tendonitis involves inflammation of the tendons surrounding the knee joint. Overuse or sudden, repetitive movements can lead to persistent pain, making activities like climbing stairs or walking challenging. Tendonitis and Bursitis can often result from similar causes and can sometimes present similar symptoms. It is also possible to experience a level of both at the same time. As such, the treatment options can be similar between them. Correcting joint misalignment in the feet through mobilisation and manipulation along with strengthening exercises can often relieve tendonitis and avoid reoccurrences.

Injuries

Traumatic injuries, such as ligament tears (e.g., ACL or meniscus tears) or fractures, can cause persistent knee pain. These injuries often require medical intervention, including structural podiatry, physiotherapy or surgery, for effective recovery.

You will surely agree that prevention is better than a cure when it comes to traumatic injuries such as these. In some instances, early action when you first experience knee pain can identify issues that can be resolved to prevent more-serious injuries occurring down the line.

Osteoarthritis

Another leading cause of persistent knee pain is a degenerative joint disease called osteoarthritis. Age, genetics, lifestyle and joint overuse can all contribute to the development of osteoarthritis. With time, the protective cartilage in the knee wears down, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness.

The non-surgical treatment options for osteoarthritis start to become unsuitable once osteoarthritis becomes sufficiently progressed. Therefore, early intervention at the onset of any knee pain can help identify potential osteoarthritis sooner to give you more treatment options. This can help reduce pain and mobility issues and delay the potential need for knee surgery as much as is possible.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

In rheumatoid arthritis, which is different from osteoarthritis, the immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, leading to inflammation. One common sign is persistent knee pain, often accompanied by warmth, redness, and changes in the shape of the joint.

Treatment Options for Knee Pain

Prevention of Further Complications

Prevention is always far better than treatment. Hip to Toe have a range of options to help you prevent knee pain and injuries. By improving joint function and alignment, increasing strength and providing education on proper body mechanics, our structural podiatry and physiotherapy practitioners can help you reduce the risk of future knee complications and chronic knee pain.

Our approach goes beyond mere exercises; it encompasses a holistic approach to managing persistent knee pain based on the patient’s unique needs. The combination of manual, hands-on therapy, joint manipulation, joint re-alignment, targeted exercises and therapeutic techniques enhances your joint alignment, muscle strength and overall function contributing to a more effective and comprehensive treatment plan.

Customised Exercise Plans

As part of your treatment your practitioner will assesses your condition and design a personalised exercise plan tailored to your specific needs.

These exercises focus on mobilising, aligning and strengthening the joints, tissues and muscles in your lower limbs with the aim of providing better function for your knee. This provides increased support to the joint, reducing the strain on your knees and reducing inflammation and pain.

Improved Joint Stability

The exercises prescribed by your practitioner not only strengthen muscles but also enhance joint stability.

Improved stability contributes to better overall joint function, reducing the risk of further knee injury and enhancing your ability to perform daily activities without experiencing persistent pain.

Pain Management

The combination of exercises and therapeutic techniques help in alleviating knee pain without the need for medications, allowing you to engage more comfortably in daily activities and minimise possible side effects and expense from medications.

Lifestyle Changes

Making some changes in your daily life can also help reduce your knee pain. Keeping active and staying healthy means your whole body will work better with less aches and pains. Managing your weight if you’re overweight will also put less stress on your knee joints. Wearing the right shoes or using special inserts such as orthotics (our podiatrist can help with these if required) can sometimes make your joints work better and reduce pain.

Other Knee Pain Treatment Options

We always prefer to try the least-invasive treatment options first to maximise the benefit to our patients while minimising inconvenience, risk and expense. But sometimes patients present to us with a knee issue that is beyond our scope of treatment. In those instances we may recommend that you seek out a relevant professional to help you consider whether some of the following options might be suitable for you.

Medication

Taking medicines can help with knee pain and swelling. For example drugs called Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). These can reduce pain and make swelling go down. There are also painkillers that can help you manage joint pain. You can talk to your doctor about what medicinal options may be suitable for you.

Injections

Depending on the cause and nature of your knee issue, some doctors may suggest giving you injections to help with knee pain. One kind is corticosteroid injections. They can reduce swelling. Another kind is hyaluronic acid injections. These can make your knee joint move more easily.

Surgery

If the condition of your knee is too severe to benefit from non-surgical treatment options, you might need to talk to your doctor about knee surgery. There are different types, like knee arthroscopy or joint replacement. This is when doctors replace the bad joint with a new one. It can also include fixing ligaments, which are like the strings that hold your joints together, in the instance of a severe traumatic injury.

Wrapping it Up

Persistent knee pain can have a significant impact on your daily life, but understanding the underlying causes and exploring appropriate treatment options can lead to improved quality of life.

It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the most effective course of action based on the specific cause of your knee pain and your individual health factors. Addressing persistent knee pain is a crucial step towards regaining your mobility and getting back to doing the things you love.

Alright, let’s talk about sports injuries. If you’ve played any sport—amateur or pro—you know the drill. One minute you’re in the zone, sprinting down the field or smashing a backhand, and the next minute you’re wincing in pain. Maybe its that pesky neck and shoulder pain from repetitive serves in tennis or an excruciating lower back pain from deadlifting. Sports injuries can really be a bummer, right?
But don’t fret, because the world of physiotherapy comes to the rescue armed with a tailored plan specifically designed to combat sciatica head-on.<!--?span >

So, What's the Deal with Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is essentially your go-to guy for all things muscle and joint related. Imagine having a mechanic but for your body. You go in, and they evaluate you from head to toe, understanding the nitty-gritty of what's gone wrong. Whether it's physiotherapy for back pain or even specific exercises for lower back issues, these experts craft a plan tailored just for you.

Got Neck and Shoulder Pain? No Problem!

Anyone who’s spent hours swinging a racket or doing butterfly strokes in the pool knows neck and shoulder pain all too well. But guess what? Physiotherapy offers targeted exercises, massages, and other cool techniques to loosen those tense muscles and get you moving freely again. They might even use ultrasound or hot and cold packs to give you that extra bit of relief. The goal? To make you strong enough so that you're less likely to tweak something in the future.

Aching Back? There’s a Plan for That

Lets say your back is killing you. After checking you out, your physiotherapist might recommend a range of treatments. This could include special exercises to build up strength in your back, some hands-on manipulation of your muscles and spine, and sometimes even gadgets like electric stimulators to get those muscles working properly. The point is to not just give you a temporary fix but to tackle whatever's causing your back pain head-on.

Exercises for Lower Back Pain

If your lower back is the main culprit, your physio will likely show you exercises aimed at strengthening it and the muscles around it. We're talking about things like pelvic tilts and core exercises to improve your posture and the way you move. The beauty of these exercises is that they can be adapted to your own comfort and skill level.

Sciatica? It's Covered Too

Have you ever experienced that shooting pain down your leg, making even the most basic activities like walking or sitting a challenge? Yep, thats sciatica – a real thorn in the side for anyone dealing with it. But fret not, because physiotherapy comes to the rescue with a tailored plan that's all about tackling sciatica head-on.

Understanding Sciatica

Before diving into the wonders of physiotherapy for sciatica, lets grasp what this condition is all about. Sciatica isn't a standalone issue; it's actually a symptom of an underlying problem, often involving a compressed or irritated sciatic nerve. This nerve, which runs from your lower back through your hips and down each leg, can wreak havoc when it's compromised.

The Role of Physiotherapy

Enter physiotherapy, your sciatica superhero. When you consult a skilled physiotherapist, they embark on a mission to understand your unique situation. They assess your movements, pinpoint the root cause of your sciatic nerve irritation, and then craft a plan tailored to your body's specific needs.

The aim?

To alleviate pain, promote healing, and enhance your overall mobility.

Spinal Adjustments and Stretches

Imagine a scenario where your spine is gently adjusted, helping to create space for that cranky sciatic nerve. That's one of the techniques a physiotherapist might employ. These adjustments can effectively relieve pressure on the nerve, offering relief from the radiating pain down your leg. But that's not all – stretches come into play too. With guided stretching exercises, your encouraging flexibility and mobility in the affected area, further assisting in the healing process.

The Magic of Nerve Glides

Ever heard of "nerve glides"? These are specialized movements that your physiotherapist might introduce into your routine. Nerve glides are designed to delicately floss the sciatic nerve – imagine giving it a little wiggle room. By performing these controlled movements, you're facilitating the nerve's ability to glide smoothly, potentially reducing irritation and discomfort along its path.

Ice and Heat: Your Home Allies

Part of the physiotherapy plan involves empowering you to take control of your healing journey. Ever tried ice and heat therapy? These are simple yet effective techniques that can be a game-changer in managing sciatica. Your physiotherapist ( like hip toe physiotherapists) will guide you on when to use ice packs to reduce inflammation and numb the area, or heat packs to relax muscles and increase blood flow. These tools become your at-home allies in managing sudden flare-ups.

The Journey to Recovery

While physiotherapy can provide immediate relief, it's also about the long game – healing and preventing future episodes of sciatica. Your physiotherapist might suggest core-strengthening exercises to provide better support to your spine, ultimately reducing the risk of recurrence. They're not just aiming for a quick fix; they're invested in your long-term well-being.

So, the next time sciatica strikes, don't despair. Remember that physiotherapy is armed with an array of strategies to combat this troublesome condition. From spinal adjustments and stretches to the intriguing nerve glides, your physiotherapist crafts a plan that's as unique as you are. By actively participating in your healing journey and following their guidance, you're not only managing sciatica but also setting the stage for a healthier, pain-free future.

It's Not Just About the Pain

What's super cool about physiotherapy that it is not only about physiotherapy exercises for lower back pain but is how they look at you as a whole person, not just an assortment of aching parts. Maybe your constant ankle sprains are actually due to the way you run. A good physio will spot that and help you correct it, preventing future injuries.

Why It's a Long-Term Win

Here’s the best part. Physiotherapy doesn't just slap a band-aid on your problem. It digs deep to find out what's really going on and helps you fix it for the long haul. For athletes, that means you can stay in the game longer, and isn't that what it's all about?

Wrapping It Up

In a nutshell, physiotherapy is pretty awesome when it comes to dealing with sports injuries. Whether you've got neck and shoulder pain, back issues, or even something tricky like sciatica, it offers a bunch of personalized, effective solutions to get you back on your feet (or back in the pool, on the court—you get the idea). So, the next time you're benched with an injury, consider giving physiotherapy a shot. Trust this, your body will thank you.

Experience the Physiotherapy Gold Coast Difference with Hip to Toe

Ready to bid adieu to pains and welcome back a life of comfort and movement?
Heel pain in the foot or bones of the feet is a common condition that affects individuals of all ages and activity levels. It can significantly impact daily activities and hinder mobility. Understanding the causes, symptoms and effective relief options for heel pain (heel pain in the foot/ heel pain in foot bones) is crucial for managing and overcoming this uncomfortable condition. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the various aspects of heel pain, including its causes, symptoms, reasons for heel pain, and the best relief methods for different types of heel pain.

Understanding Heel Pain/Heel Pain Foot

Heel pain, also known as plantar fasciitis, is a condition characterised by discomfort and inflammation in the heel area. It typically occurs due to excessive strain on the plantar fascia, which is a thick band of tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes. Several factors contribute to heel pain in the foot including:

Overuse and repetitive stress: Engaging in high-impact activities such as running or jumping can strain the plantar fascia, leading to heel pain in the foot.

Plantar fasciitis: Inflammation of the plantar fascia is often caused by repetitive stretching and tearing of the tissue. This inflammation is a common cause of heel pain.

Heel spurs: These are bony growths that develop on the heel bone and can cause pain when they press against the surrounding tissues.

Symptoms of heel spurs

Heel spurs are bony growths that can develop on the heel bone, often in conjunction with plantar fasciitis. While heel spurs themselves may not cause pain, they can contribute to the development of symptoms such as intense heel pain, especially when standing or walking. The pain is typically localized to the bottom of the heel and may be accompanied by tenderness and inflammation in the affected area. Individuals with heel spurs may also experience discomfort or a stabbing sensation when pressure is applied to the heel. It’s important to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment if you suspect you have heel spurs.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Identifying the symptoms of heel pain in the foot can help determine the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment. Common symptoms include:

Intense heel pain in the bottom of the foot, especially in the morning or after prolonged periods of rest.

Toe and heel pain, pain that radiates from the heel to the arch of the foot or to the toes.

The feeling of pain in the heel bone, soreness and tenderness in the heel bone.

If you suspect you have heel pain from your foot bones, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis. They may perform a physical examination, review your medical history, and they will likely order imaging tests like X-rays or ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis.

Reasons for Heel Pain

Heel pain from bones can occur due to various factors and conditions. Some common reasons for heel pain include:

Plantar Fasciitis

Heel Spurs

Bursitis

Heel Bone Fracture

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Obesity

Unsuitable Footwear, including wearing high heels or wearing badly fitting or worn-out shoes, etc.

Effective Relief Methods

We now know the reasons for heel pain so now we should consider relief methods. Thankfully, several treatments and self-care measures can help alleviate heel pain in the foot and promote healing. Here are some effective relief methods:

Rest and ice therapy: When heels hurt, resting the affected foot and applying ice packs to the heel can reduce inflammation and relieve pain. You can even freeze a bottle of water and rest it in the arch of your foot. It’s also usually best to not apply ice directly to the skin, so use a layer of towel or something similar between the ice and your skin. Stretching exercises: Walking with heel pain is tough, gentle stretches and exercises targeting the calf muscles and the plantar fascia can help alleviate tension and improve flexibility.

Orthotic devices and supportive footwear: Customized shoe inserts or orthotic devices can provide additional arch support and cushioning, reducing strain on the heel. Although it is sometimes possible with the right treatment and exercises to correct your joint alignment so you can eventually become pain-free without needing orthotics. Learn more here: https://hiptotoe.com.au/orthotic-alternative-gold-coast/

Physiotherapy/manual therapy/structural podiatry: If you have severe pain in your heels, you should consult a suitable therapist. A trained therapist who specialises in treating heel pain in the feet can guide you through specific exercises and therapies to strengthen the muscles, improve flexibility, and promote healing. This is often able to help you avoid (or defer) surgery and hopefully help you reduce or remove the need for pain medication or anti-inflammatory medication etc.

Medications: If you are experiencing pain to bottom of heel. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help reduce heel pain bone and inflammation. That being said, these medications are not an ideal solution as they often have side effects and are an ongoing cost. They could often also be more about treating the symptoms than the cause. That’s not to say that in some cases, there could be a use for these medications, although (as with all medical interventions) you need to carefully weigh the benefits with the risks.

Corticosteroid injections: In severe cases of sore heel, a healthcare professional may administer corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and provide temporary relief. But as per the above, finding the cause of inflammation and pain and treating that is usually preferable to injections where possible.

Preventing Heel Pain in the Foot

Prevention is crucial in managing heel pain and minimising its recurrence. Here are some preventive measures to consider if you know the reasons for heel pain in the feet:

Gradually increase activity levels: Avoid sudden increases in exercise intensity and duration to prevent overloading the plantar fascia.

Wear appropriate footwear if walking with heel pain: Choose shoes with proper arch support, cushioning, and shock absorption. Avoid high heels and unsupportive or worn-out footwear.

Maintain a healthy weight: Excess weight puts additional stress on the feet and can contribute to causing sore heels. Aim to maintain a healthy weight through proper diet and regular exercise.

Warm-up and cool-down: In cases where you are experiencing severe pain in your heels prior to exercise, warm up with gentle stretches to prepare the muscles and tissues. Afterward, cool down and stretch again to prevent tightness. You can even use foam rollers or massage to help relieve pain, stiffness and soreness.

Modify activities: If you engage in high-impact activities, consider incorporating low-impact exercises like swimming or cycling to reduce stress on the feet and to help relieve and possibly cure heel pain.

Summary: Heel pain can be a frustrating and debilitating condition, but with the right knowledge, proper understanding and management, relief is possible. By identifying the causes, recognising the symptoms, reasons for heel pain and implementing effective relief methods, you can minimise heel pain in your feet and regain your mobility. Remember, this article contains general advice which may not be suitable for everyone. It’s always essential to consult a healthcare professional who is experienced in treating all types of foot and heel pain for an accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment plan. With patience and consistent care, you can overcome heel pain and get back to enjoying a pain-free lifestyle.

Are you looking for a lasting knee pain treatment from a Gold Coast podiatrist? If the answer is “yes”, then watch this quick video about knee pain, and read on…

“Knee Discomfort is very common, but most people only treat the symptoms instead of the cause, which can lead to hip and back problems”

If knee pain is ignored and not treated it can lead to muscles, ligaments and tendons constantly pulling and tearing, which will cause pain and can lead to permanent damage. In worst case scenarios this can lead to:

Knee replacement

Hip replacement

and irreversible degeneration of the knee

“When you suffer from knee pain you need to see someone that helps people find the root cause of the problem and treats knee pain every day”

When you see an expert, someone who lives and breaths treating knee pain everyday, someone who only treats from the hips down, you will finally be in the right hands so that you can get rapid, lasting relief from pain, and get back to loving life and doing all the activities that make you happy.

When you get a Gold Coast Podiatrist who is an expert at finding the root cause of your problem to treat you, you could start:

Doing the activities you love

Be pain free

Avoid surgery

Only treating your symptoms will never get rid of your problem or your pain. That’s why Hip to Toe Gold Coast Podiatrists aim, where possible, in getting people out of orthotics, out of pain and away from surgery. We find the root cause of the problem by realigning the joints in the knees, hips and feet, which get your body back into the position it should be in.

“If your car tyres are wearing unevenly and you just replace the tyres without checking the alignment, What will happen?”

If you’ve ever wanted to get away from knee pain then keep reading, these next three tips are golden and just might change your life;

Do you walk around the house (on tiles or laminate floors) without shoes? Our bodies aren’t meant to walk on concrete make sure you put shoes on around the house

Elevate your leg, put ice on it and use compression

Check your running shoes, how do your shock absorbers look? If they are worn out and have lost their springiness, it might be time to buy a new pair!

If any of this relates to you and your knee problems or knee pain, then please feel free to reach out to us at hip to Toe Gold Coast Podiatrists for more information, or feel free to call us to ask more or to book a consultation to discuss your condition and treatment options – 07 5571 7329.

When it comes to addressing discomfort from hip to toe, individuals often find themselves torn between two primary options: orthotics and medication. Orthotics are custom-made shoe inserts that aim to provide support and alignment, while medication offers temporary relief from pain and inflammation. However, these solutions may not always be the most comfortable or effective. In this blog post, we will delve into the pros and cons of orthotics and medication, as well as explore alternative approaches to finding relief from hip to toe discomfort.

Orthotics

Orthotics are widely used to correct foot and lower limb alignment issues, aiming to alleviate pain and improve mobility. While they can provide significant benefits for some individuals, there are several factors to consider:

Pros of Orthotics

Support and Alignment: Custom orthotics can provide the necessary support to improve foot and lower limb alignment, potentially reducing discomfort in the hips, knees, and ankles.

Correcting Structural Issues: Orthotics can help address specific structural issues, such as flat feet or high arches, by redistributing pressure and promoting proper foot mechanics.

Injury Prevention: By providing stability and cushioning, orthotics may help prevent injuries related to overpronation or supination, which can lead to hip, knee, or ankle problems.

Cons of Orthotics

Discomfort and Adjustment Period: It often takes time to get used to wearing orthotics, and some individuals may experience discomfort initially. Additionally, adjusting to the new alignment and support can require patience and persistence.

Limited Scope: While orthotics can address foot-related issues, they may not be effective in addressing discomfort originating from other parts of the body, such as the hips or back.

Medication

Medication is a common approach to managing hip to toe discomfort, as it offers temporary relief from pain and inflammation. However, it is essential to understand the pros and cons associated with medication:

Pros of Medication

Pain Relief: Medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can provide temporary relief from pain and reduce inflammation in affected areas.

Convenience and Accessibility: Over-the-counter pain medications are readily available and can be used to manage mild to moderate discomfort without the need for a prescription.

Cons of Medication

Temporary Relief: Medications provide temporary relief and do not address the root cause of the discomfort. Continued reliance on medication may mask underlying issues that require attention.

Potential Side Effects: Medications, particularly when used long-term or in high doses, can have side effects, such as stomach irritation, liver damage, or allergic reactions. It is important to follow recommended dosages and consult a healthcare professional if necessary.

Exploring Alternative Approaches

While orthotics and medication are common solutions, alternative approaches can offer additional options for finding relief from hip to toe discomfort:

Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can provide exercises and techniques to strengthen and stretch the affected muscles and joints, promoting natural alignment and reducing discomfort.

Lifestyle Modifications: Incorporating healthy habits like maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, and practicing proper posture can contribute to overall musculoskeletal health.

Complementary Therapies: Options such as chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage therapy, or yoga can help alleviate discomfort and promote natural healing.

Footwear Selection: Choosing supportive and comfortable footwear with appropriate cushioning and arch support can significantly reduce discomfort and improve overall foot health.

When faced with hip to toe discomfort, the choice between orthotics and medication is not the only path to consider. While orthotics can provide support and alignment for certain foot-related issues, they may not be suitable for everyone, and adjusting to them can take time. Medication, on the other hand, offers temporary relief but does not address the underlying causes. Exploring alternative approaches, such as physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and complementary therapies, can offer a more holistic and comprehensive approach to finding relief from discomfort. It is essential to consult with healthcare professionals to determine the best course of action for your specific needs, ensuring long-term comfort and mobility from hip to toe.

Think of your home.

Think of the strong foundation it is built upon. Think about the ground that it was built on and the concrete that was laid into the ground before any one even started to build a house on top of that land.

Now Think of Your Feet Like The Foundations Of A House

The stronger your foundations are, the stronger your house is. You wouldn’t build your house in a swamp or on sand because it would sink. Your roof would start to slip off, cracks would appear in the walls and eventually you would end up with wiring and plumbing problems as the structure bears down excessively on the cables and pipes.

You have two options:

You could get a builder to fix the roof, and a plasterer to plaster over the cracks, and a plumber to fix the pipes and an electrician to fix the wires.

OR

You could treat the underlying cause of all these problems.

It is only by solidifying the foundations of the house that the roof will sit properly and the walls will stop cracking and the wires and pipes will work properly.

At Hip to Toe we realign the joints in the feet, knees and hips getting the body back into the correct position. We get people out of orthotics, out of pain and away from surgery.

If So This Is An Important Article For You!!

There are so many people out there wearing orthotics, taking medication or looking at getting surgery. An orthotic is a crutch. It doesn’t actually fix the problem. If you don’t treat the root cause of the problem you could end up with the following problems:
1. Always having to wear orthotics
2. Having Surgery
3. Never being pain free

When we treat clients and treat the underlying problem by realigning the joints in the feet, knees and hips we get clients back to doing what they love and we see alot of clients do the following:
1. Throw out their orthotics
2. Avoid Surgery
3. Get back to doing the activities they have always dreamed of

“Orthotics Are a Crutch They Don’t Fix the Problem”

So why do we work to give you freedom from orthotics? Well orthotics have a number of problems, not least of which is the restriction on footwear. They can only be fitted into certain shoes, they can not be worn in heels, they can not be worn when you are barefoot, they can not be worn in thongs, I could go on. Orthotics can only change your alignment when you are actually wearing them. If you are not wearing them they are not helping you. By wearing them you are giving your body the opportunity to function better and allow the tissues to repair. But they can not correct your subluxations.

Ever Wondered What The Best Type of Shoe is to Buy?

We get asked all the time:
1. What is the best brand of shoe
2. Where should I buy them
3. What should I look for

The answer is simple………… There is not one shoe that that is the best shoe for everyone because everyone is different and needs different types of shoes as we all have different types of feet.

Everyone is different, we have different joints, different muscles, different tissues and different structures. It is because of all these differences that there is such a wide variety of shoes on the market.

READ BELOW TO SEE SOME TIPS WHEN BUYING SHOES:

1. Always try both shoes on, everyone has one foot bigger than the other and you need to make sure they fit both feet comfortably

2. Walk around the shoe shop a few times before buying them. If they don’t feel comfortable on the third lap they most likely aren’t the shoe for you

3. Is the shoe wide enough for your toes? When you put the shoe on do you have room to move your toes in the shoe or are they being crushed together?

4. Having a slight raise at the heel will help the foot a complete flat ballet shoe will offer no support or comfort

”We Have Helped Many Clients Get Back Into the Shoes They Love”

Some shoes are designed for people with feet that roll in and flatten. Other shoes are designed for people that roll out and have high arches. Some shoes are designed to lock the foot and hold it stable. Other shoes are designed to unlock the foot and increase movement.

Without looking at an individual foot it is impossible to say what type of shoe is right for you.

‘If you have pain while wearing a shoe……. it most likely is the wrong shoe for you’

The pain does not necessarily need to be in the feet, it could be pain in the legs, knees, hips or back.

Our goal is go get people wearing the shoes they love and doing the things that make them happy. If you aren’t wearing the shoes you love and suffer from foot, knee and hip pain.
